Pazifik Schweres Erdbeben bei Salomonen-Inseln

Nach einem heftigen Erdstoß vor der Küste der Salomonen-Inseln hat das amerikanische Pazifik-Zentrum für mehrere Stunden eine Tsunami-Warnung ausgegeben. Das Beben hatte eine Stärke von 7,8.

Ein gewaltiges Erdbeben hat sich am frühen Freitagmorgen (Ortszeit) vor der Inselgruppe der Salomonen im Südpazifik ereignet. Die amerikanische Geologiebehörde USGS gab die Stärke erst mit 8,0 und später mit 7,8 an. Das Beben ereignete sich um 18.38 Uhr am Donnerstag deutscher Zeit (4.38 Uhr am Freitagmorgen Ortszeit). In den Folgestunden kam es zu etlichen weiteren starken Beben in der Region, die meist über der Stärke von 5,0 lagen.
Meldungen über Schäden waren zunächst nicht bekannt. Das Zentrum lag demnach rund 70 Kilometer südwestlich der Stadt Kirakira im Meer, das Beben ereignete sich in rund 50 Kilometern Tiefe.
Das US-Tsunami-Warnzentrum hielt zunächst gefährliche Tsunami-Wellen im Pazifikraum für möglich, so an den Küsten der Salomonen oder von Papua-Neuguinea, Neuseeland, und sogar im entfernten Hawaii. Doch im Laufe des Abends wurde für alle Gebiete Entwarnung gegeben. Es gab zunächst auch keine Informationen über Schäden oder Verletzte in der Region./Das Pazifik-Zentrum für Tsunamiwarnungen hielt weitreichende Tsunami-Wellen in Teilen des Pazifikraums für möglich. Die  Warnung für einige Küsten der Salomonen, Vanuatus, Papua-Neuguineas und Neukaledoniens wurde nach etwa zwei Stunden wieder aufgehoben.

In den vergangenen zehn Jahren wurden die Salomonen zweimal von einem schweren Tsunami getroffen. Beben auch größerer Stärke sind auf den Salomonen keine Seltenheit. Die Inselgruppe liegt auf dem Pazifischen Feuerring, einer hufeisenförmigen Zone entlang der Küsten des Pazifischen Ozeans. Hier schieben sich im Erdinnern verschiedene Platten untereinander. Auf den Inseln leben insgesamt etwa 570.000 Menschen.

Etwa 70 Kilometer vor der Inselgruppe der Salomonen im Südpazifik hat sich ein Beben der Stärke 7,7 ereignet, wie die US-Erdbebenwarte meldete. Das Tsunami-Zentrum gab eine Warnung für die Region um die Salomonen heraus.
Ausgedehnte Tsunami-Wellen seien möglich, hiess es. Betroffen sein könnten in nächsten Stunden Küsten der Salomonen, Papua Neuguinea, Vanuatu und Neukaledonien. US-Behörden untersuchen, ob auch eine Gefahr für Hawaii besteht, wie «BBC» schreibt.
