Geologic Effects of the March 1964 Earthquake and Associated Seismic Sea Waves on Kodiak and Nearby Islands, Alaska

Abstract Kodiak Island and the nearby islands constitute a mountainous landmass with an aggregate area of 4,900 square miles that lies at the western border of the Gulf of Alaska and from 20 to 40 miles off the Alaskan mainland. Igneous and metamorphic rocks underlie most of the area except for a narrow belt of moderately to poorly indurated rocks bordering the Gulf of Alaska coast and local accumulations of unconsolidated alluvial and marine deposits along the streams and coast. The area is relatively undeveloped and is sparsely inhabited. About 4,800 of the 5,700 permanent residents in the area live in the city of Kodiak or at the Kodiak Naval Station. The great earthquake, which occurred on March 27, 1964, at 5:36 p.m. Alaska standard time (March 28,1964, 0336 Greenwich mean time), and had a Richter magnitude of 8.4-8.5, was the most severe earthquake felt on Kodiak Island and its nearby islands in modern times. Although the epicenter lies in Prince William Sound 250 miles northeast of Kodiak—the principal city of the area—the areal distribution of the thousands of aftershocks that followed it, the local tectonic deformation, and the estimated source area of the subsequent seismic sea wave, all suggest that the Kodiak group of islands lay immediately adjacent to, and northwest of, the focal region from which the elastic seismic energy was radiated. The duration of strong ground motion in the area was estimated at 2½ minutes. Locally, the tremors were preceded by sounds audible to the human ear and were reportedly accompanied in several places by visible ground waves. Intensity and felt duration of the shocks during the main earthquake and aftershock sequence varied markedly within the area and were strongly influenced by the local geologic environment. Estimated Mercalli intensities in most areas underlain by unconsolidated Quaternary deposits ranged from VIII to as high as IX. In contrast, intensities in areas of upper Tertiary rock ranged from VII to VIII, and in areas of relatively well indurated lower Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks, from VI to VII. Local subsidence of as much as 10 feet was widespread in noncohesive granular deposits through compaction, flow, and sliding that resulted from vibratory loading during the earthquake. This phenomenon, which was largely restricted to saturated beach and alluvial deposits or artificial fill, was locally accompanied by extensive cracking of the ground and attendant ejection of water and water-sediment mixtures. Numerous landslides, including a wide variety of rockfalls, rockslides, and flows along steep slopes, were triggered by the long-duration horizontal and vertical accelerations during the earthquake. The landslides are most numerous in a narrow belt along the southeast coast of Kodiak Island and the nearby offshore islands. Their abundance appears to be related to an area underlain predominantly by Tertiary rocks. Temporary and permanent changes of level occurred after the earthquake in some wells, lakes, and streams throughout the area; ice was cracked, and the salinity of a few wells increased. Permanent change of water level at some localities appears to be related to readjustments of fracture porosity by earthquake-induced movements of bedrock blocks. Increased salinity of wells in coastal areas resulted from encroachment of seawater into aquifiers after subsidence during the earthquake, and to flooding of watersheds by seismic sea waves. Vertical displacements, both downward and upward, occurred throughout the area as a result of crustal warping along a northeast-trending axis. Most of Kodiak and all of Afognak, Shuyak, and adjacent islands are within a regional zone of subsidence whose trough plunges gently northeastward and approximately coincides with the mountainous backbone of Kodiak Island. Subsidence in excess of 6 feet occurred throughout the northern part of the zone-a maximum subsidence of 6½ feet having occurred on Marmot and, eastern Afognak Islands. Southeast of the axis of tectonic tilting, uplift of at least 2lh feet occurred in a narrow zone that includes most of the southeasterly capes of Kodiak Island, the southeastern half of Sitkalidak Island, and Sitkinak Island. The uplift is inferred to extend offshore over much or all of the continental shelf adjacent to the Kodiak group of islands. Within the affected area, tectonic subsidence, which was locally augmented by surficial subsidence of unconsolidated. deposits, caused widespread inundation of shorelines and attendant damage to intertidal organisms, nearshore terrestrial vegetation, and salmon-spawning areas. The most devastating effect of the earthquake on Kodiak Island and nearby islands resulted from seismic sea waves that probably originated along a linear zone of differential uplift in the Gulf of Alaska. A train of at least seven seismic sea waves, having initial periods of 50–55 minutes, struck along all the southeast coast of the island group from 38 to 63 minutes after the earthquake. The southeast shores were repeatedly washed by destructive waves having runup heights along exposed coasts of perhaps as much as 40 feet above existing tide level, and of 8–20 feet along protected shores. Runup heights of the waves were much less on the northwest and southwest sides of the islands, and no wave damage was incurred there. Locally, high-velocity currents that accompanied the waves caused intense erosion and redistribution of unconsolidated natural and artificial shore deposits and of shallow sea-floor deposits. The Alaska earthquake was the greatest natural catastrophe to befall the Kodiak Island area in historic time. The combination of seismic shock and the earthquake-related tectonic deformation and seismic sea waves took 18 lives, destroyed property worth about $45 million, and resulted in estimated losses of income to the fishing industry of an additional $5 million. Most of the damage and all of the loss of life were directly attributable to the seismic sea waves that crippled the city of Kodiak, wiped out the village of Kaguyak, and destroyed most of the village of Old Harbor and parts of the villages of Afognak and Uzinki. Bridges and segments of the highways in the vicinity of the city of Kodiak were washed out, and parts of the Kodiak Naval Station were inundated and damaged. Especially serious to all the damaged communities was the loss of fishing boats, seafood processing plants, and other waterfront installations, which had been the mainstay of the economy. Additional heavy losses resulted from the combined regional tectonic and local surficial subsidence that occurred during the earthquake. Widespread shoreline flooding by high tides necessitated raising, protecting, or removing many installations otherwise undamaged by the earthquake or waves. Structural damage attributable to seismic shock during the earthquake was relatively light and was restricted to areas underlain by saturated unconsolidated deposits. The chief structural failure in the area as a result of shaking was the collapse of part of a cannery built on saturated beach deposits that were partially liquefied during the earthquake. Minor structural damage resulted from differential settlement and cracking of the ground on natural granular deposits and artificial fills. The overwhelming majority of structures are constructed on indurated bedrock; none of these sustained damage other than small losses resulting from shifting about and breakage of their contents.

On March 27 in 1964 (March 28 in UTC), a huge Mw~9.2 earthquake rupture of the subduction megathrust happened offshore southern Alaska. These fine maps, published in Science (June 1965) by Georges Plafker, USGS geologist, display the coseismic vertical deformation measured in the field. The zone of coseismic uplift – above and in front of the rupture portion of the megathrust – is backed by a wide zone of subsidence. Afterward, this, and a comparable scenario observed after the 1960 Chile earthquake, will be modeled in many papers until recently.

WHEN A NATURAL EVENT TURNS INTO A DISASTER

The tallest tsunami wave ever recorded killed only 5 people

Tsunamis are natural events and disasters are not natural. These series of powerful waves are only devastating if people and their livelihoods get in the way. To measure the impact of a tsunami you should not measure the size of the wave, but the level of human suffering caused.

In fact, the largest tsunami wave ever recorded broke on a cool July night in 1958 and only claimed five lives. A 1,720 foot tsunami towered over Lituya Bay, a quiet fjord in Alaska, after an earthquake rumbled 13 miles away.

This massive tremor triggered around 30.6 million cubic meters of rock to fall 3,000 feet into the Lituya Glacier, causing a torrent of displaced water to rear up and form a monstrous wave which, miraculously, only killed five people.

Legend (and scientific record) has it that the Gulf of Alaska is no stranger to tsunami. On a normal day it’s a sleepy landscape of vast mountain ranges topped with snow and ice. But this docile part of the world has felt some of nature’s most violent behaviour.

Destruction but not disaster

The treacherous waters around this part of the Alaskan coast are a well known risk for sailors. At times currents reach 14 miles per hour and numerous explorers from the 16th to 19th centuries met their fate in the region.

This dark concoction of powerful, twisting waters and unsteady ground made the ultimate wave. 

What turns a tsunami into a disaster is when it affects populations. Luckily few people were around to feel its destruction that night. 

The series of waves sank one boat that was resting near the entrance to the bay, killing the husband and wife inside. A second boat in the middle of the bay survived. Their vessel smoothly carried them 80 feet high over the wave’s crest.

As the tsunami continued to power through the Bay at 100 miles an hour, it pushed a third boat through the opening into the Gulf of Alaska.

Millions of trees were pulled from their roots as it passed. Damage that can still be observed today.

Not the deadliest

Despite easily being able to wash over the Empire State Building, the monster wave of 1958 wasn’t the most destructive. That devastating record was broken by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that was one tenth of the height.

On 26th December 2004 an earthquake that hit over 9.3 on the Richter Scale caused a tunnel of water. The tsunami travelled over 3,000 miles impacting 17 countries in Southeastern and Southern Asia and Eastern and Southern Africa [and and a total of 55 countries in the world]. With a recorded death toll of 230,000 [300.000]  people and damages over $10 billion, it is one of the worst [man-made] disasters the modern world has ever seen. 

Unlike the 500m wave that hit 60 years ago, that broke with almost no one around, this utter destruction was possible because of the hundreds of hotels and businesses built in a tsunami risk zone. 

It highlights the need to carefully think about where homes and businesses are built to avoid the creation of new risk and reduce exposure to people at risk. Only when this is taken into account can we stop natural events turning into disaster. [...] J.Ch.

• Die Krise führt laut Welthandelsorganisation zu einem dramatischen Rückgang des weltweiten Austauschs von Waren und Dienstleistungen.

Soll niemand sagen, es habe keine Warnungen gegeben. Sechs Jahre ist es her, da veröffentlichten Ian Goldin, Professor in Oxford, und Mike Mariathasan, heute Juniorprofessor in Leuven, ein Buch unter dem Titel " The Butterfly Defect" ("Der Schmetterlings-Defekt"). Das ist ein Wortspiel mit dem Begriff "Schmetterlingseffekt". Den verwenden Wissenschaftler, wenn sie beschreiben wollen, dass in komplexen Systemen kleine Ursachen völlig unvorhersehbare Folgen haben können: Der Flügelschlag eines Schmetterlings in Brasilien kann einen Tornado in Texas auslösen. Und das ist nicht nur abstrakte Theorie. Die globalisierte Wirtschaft von heute, so schrieben Goldin und Mariathasan, ist so ein komplexes System geworden, in dem nicht vorhersagbare Dinge passieren, zum Beispiel Finanzkrisen und eben Pandemien.

Darauf muss die Welt sich einstellen. Heute sind Goldin und Mariathasan gefragte Leute. Als Experten, die schon 2014 einen Zusammenhang zwischen der Ausbreitung von Viren und der Globalisierung gesehen haben. "Die Globalisierung hat immens viel Gutes bewirkt", sagt Goldin. "Aber sie birgt systemische Risiken, mit denen wir bisher nicht umgehen können." Ein Beispiel dafür war die Finanzkrise von 2008/2009, ein zweites ist jetzt die Corona-Epidemie. (SZ)

Globalisierung hat uns in eine kranke Welt und in eine Art der Abhängigkeit geführt, dass in einer Notsituation die Versorgungssicherheit an Mitteln, die unser Überleben sichern, nicht gewährleistet ist. Der Rückzug aus der Globalisierung muss also die Lösung sein.

Der Papst sagte gerade: Wir gaben uns lange und leichtsinnig einer Illusion hin, dass wir unsere Gesundheit beibehalten können in einer durch und durch kranken Welt. Es sind Worte der Weisheit.

Bedeutet die Corona-Krise also das Ende der Globalisierung? Manche glauben das. Und wir auch.

DAS ROTE VIRUS - THE CHINESE VIRUS

Es gibt bei den G7-Staaten* einen Streit um die Frage, wie die jetzige  Pandemie genannt werden soll. Das State Department besteht auf der Bezeichnung "Wuhan-Virus". US-Außenminister Mike Pompeo vertritt damit die Linie seines Präsidenten. Donald Trump spricht auf Pressekonferenzen und auf Twitter meist vom "chinesischen Virus" (China Virus).

Die anderen G7-Mitglieder (darunter Deutschland) lehnen eine solche Bezeichnung ab, die suggeriert, bei der Pandemie handele es sich um ein chinesisches Problem.Sie schlagen die auch von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) verwendete Bezeichnung "Covid 19" vor. In den bisherigen Verhandlungen der G7-Außenministerien konnte keine Einigung erzielt werden.

Die starre Haltung der US-Regierung passt zu dem Kurs, den Trump in der Coronakrise fährt: Schuld sind die Chinesen, Europa hat zu spät reagiert und dazu beigetragen, dass das Virus in die USA gelangte. Das ist seine Linie.

Wann brach die Krankheit in China wirklich aus?

Diese Woche veröffentlichten gleich mehrere chinesische Propagandamedien ein Dokument mit einem etwas umständlichen Titel. Der Titel lautet, der Vollständigkeit halber: „Zeitplan Chinas für die Veröffentlichung von Informationen zu Covid-19 und für die Förderung der internationalen Zusammenarbeit bei der Bekämpfung der Epidemie“.

Die chinesische Regierung erklärt darin, wann sie im Zeitraum zwischen Dezember und März welche Informationen über das Coronavirus veröffentlicht und wann sie welche internationalen Partner ins Bild gesetzt hat. Ziel des Dokuments ist es, den Vorwurf zu zerstreuen, China habe Informationen über den Ausbruch des Virus vertuscht. Und es soll die Volksrepublik als verantwortungsbewussten und kompetenten Krisenmanager darstellen.

Wer sich das Dokument genauer anschaut, wird von der bloßen Länge überrascht. Es ist 40 Seiten lang. Dennoch ist es an manchen Stellen merkwürdig vage. Der erste Eintrag ist verzeichnet unter: „Ende Dezember 2019“.
Doch inzwischen deuten viele Indizien darauf hin, dass die ersten Erkrankungen schon mehrere Wochen vorher auftraten. Die Hongkonger Zeitung „South China Morning Post“ berichtete etwa schon im März unter Berufung auf chinesische Regierungsdokumente, dass Chinas erster bestätigter Covid-19-Fall auf den 17. November zurückverfolgt werden könne. Zudem berichteten die US-Fernsehsender ABC, CNN und NBC, dass US-Geheimdienstbeamte bereits Ende November [nach anderen Medienberichten aber erst im Janua]r davor warnten, dass in Wuhan eine Seuche um sich greife. Die US-Regierung bestreitet diese Berichte jedoch.

Doch nicht nur der Zeitstrahl, den die chinesische Regierung in ihrem Propagandadokument präsentiert, entspricht wohl nicht der Wahrheit. Die Behauptung, alles getan zu haben, um das Virus einzudämmen, ist sogar nachweislich falsch – zumindest bis zum 23. Januar, dem Tag, an dem die chinesische Regierung schlagartig umschaltetet und die gesamte Provinz Hubei, rund 60 Millionen Menschen, von der Außenwelt abriegelte.

Die Ärzte Ai Fen und Li Wenliang beispielsweise warnten schon im Dezember vor einem neuartigem Virus. Doch sie wurden mundtot gemacht. Davon ist in Chinas Propagandadokument nichts zu lesen. Li Wenliang ist inzwischen am Coronavirus verstorben. Ai Fen hingegen ist nach Medienberichten verschwunden. Der chinesische Sicherheitsapparat nutzt die Krise, um seine Kritiker wegzusperren.

Am Dienstag teilte die Disziplinarkommission der Kommunistischen Partei (KP) mit, dass gegen Ren Zhiqiang ermittelt werde, wegen „ernster Verstöße gegen Gesetz und Disziplin“. Ren, früherer Chef eines staatlichen Immobilienkonzerns aus einflussreicher Familie, der seit Jahrzehnten Parteimitglied ist und früher enge Kontakte zur obersten Riege der chinesischen Führung pflegte, hatte KP-Chef Xi Jinping – ohne ihn beim Namen zu nennen – in einem Essay als „Clown“ verunglimpft.

Am Mittwoch wurde dann schließlich – nach 76 Tagen – der Lockdown in Wuhan aufgehoben, nachdem die Reisebeschränkungen im Rest der Provinz Hubei bereits Ende März ausgelaufen waren. Zum ersten Mal seit mehr als zweieinhalb Monaten verlassen nun wieder Autos, Züge und Flugzeuge die Stadt. Politiker aus der ganzen Welt werden jetzt auf Wuhan schauen und versuchen, aus der chinesischen Erfahrung Erkenntnisse für die eigenen Länder zu gewinnen. Doch der Versuch, von China zu lernen, stößt an enge Grenzen. So gilt es als wahrscheinlich, dass die amtlichen chinesischen Infektions- und Todeszahlen gefälscht sind.

In China sind offiziell nur rund 83.000 Menschen mit dem Coronavirus infiziert. Selbst in Deutschland sind es inzwischen 122.000 Infizierte, das sind fast 50 Prozent mehr. In Wuhan, dem Ground Zero der Epidemie, sollen nur etwa 2500 Menschen an dem Virus gestorben sein. Chinesische Medienberichte deuten auf ein Vielfaches hin.

Auch die US-Geheimdienste gehen davon aus, dass China sowohl die Infektions- als auch die Todeszahlen zu niedrig angibt, wie die Nachrichtenagentur „Bloomberg“ berichtete. In der „Washington Post“ forderte ein Kommentator, dass ausländische Medien chinesische Zahlen in Zukunft ausnahmslos mit einem Sternchen versehen sollten – um zu kennzeichnen, dass da wahrscheinlich etwas faul sei.

There is a dispute among the G7 countries * about what the current pandemic should be called. The State Department insists on the name "Wuhan virus". US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo represents the line of his president. Donald Trump speaks mostly of the "Chinese virus" (China Virus) at press conferences and on Twitter.

The other G7 members (including Germany) reject such a designation, which suggests that the pandemic is a Chinese problem. They also propose the "Covid 19" designation used by the World Health Organization (WHO). No agreement has been reached in the negotiations to date by the G7 foreign ministries.

The rigid stance of the US government fits the course Trump is taking in the corona crisis: the Chinese are to blame, Europe reacted too late and contributed to the virus reaching the United States. That is his line.

THERE WERE ACCORDING TO MEDIA REPORTS APOCALYPTIC HYGIENE CONDITIONS ON A WET MARKET WHERE ANIMALS WERE TRADED AND EVISCERATED INFECTING THE FIRST CHINESE IN NOVEMBER 2019. ON DECEMBER 1, 2019 THE CHINESE DETECTED THE OUTBREAK OF A NEW, HIGHLY INFECTIOUS FLU AND DETERMINED THE CAUSE OF THE DISEASE: THE PATHOGENIC CORONA VIRUS. ALL THESE CIRCUMSTANCES THE CHINESE COMMUNIST CRIMINALS HAVE COVERED UP FROM THE WORLD FOR A MONTH. Die Außenminister sieben führender westlicher Industriestaaten haben sich in einer Videokonferenz nicht auf gemeinsame Leitlinien für den Kampf gegen das Corona-Virus einigen können.

Hauptgrund: Die USA bestanden schon in den Vorgesprächen darauf, in einer möglichen Abschlusserklärung der G7 die chinesische Herkunft des Virus zu betonen.

US-Außenminister Mike Pompeo warf China am Mittwoch nach den Beratungen vor, Informationen zu dem Virus zurückgehalten und bewusst Falschinformationen zu den Ursprüngen der Pandemie verbreitet zu haben. «Sie waren das erste Land, das von den Risiken dieses Virus für die Welt wusste, und sie haben die Weitergabe dieserInformationen wiederholt verzögert», beklagte Pompeo.

Die Kommunistische Partei Chinas habe Wissenschaftler und Experten aus den USA, die sich vor Ort ein Bild hätten machen wollen, nicht zugelassen. Außerdem hätten hochrangige Vertreter der Partei «verrücktes Gerede» darüber verbreitet, ob die USA das Virus nach China gebracht hätten. Auch in sozialen Medien sei dies gestreut worden. Pompeo sagte, die G7-Vertreter seien sich bei ihren Beratungen alle dieser «Desinformationskampagne» der Chinesen bewusst gewesen.

Pompeo kritisierte: «Die Kommunistische Partei Chinas stellt eine erhebliche Bedrohung für unsere Gesundheit und Lebensweise dar, wie der Ausbruch des Wuhan-Virus deutlich gezeigt hat.» Die Partei drohe auch, die freie und offene Ordnung in den G7-Ländern zu untergraben.

Der US-Chefdiplomat sprach bei seinem Auftritt wiederholt vom «Wuhan-Virus» und betonte, die Pandemie habe in der chinesischen Stadt Wuhan begonnen. Der Begriff «Wuhan-Virus» tauchte nach dpa-Informationen auch in dem Entwurf der USA für eine G7-Erklärung auf, der schon in den Vorgesprächen auf den Widerstand der anderen Mitglieder stieß. Die Gruppe, der neben den USA und Deutschland auch Frankreich, Italien, Großbritannien, Japan und Kanada angehören, einigte schließlich darauf, ganz auf eine gemeinsame Erklärung zu verzichten.(dpa)

Am Montagvormittag vermeldete das Robert-Koch-Institut (RKI) für Deutschland 22.672 Fälle mit dem neuartigen Coronavirus und 86 Todesfälle, die Johns-Hopkins-Universität jedoch 24.873 Fälle und 94 Tote.

Eine Diskrepanz von rund 2000 Fällen. Wie kommt dieser Unterschied zustande? Auch andere Quellen wie das Worldometer sprechen von 24.873, Risklayer von 28.779 Fällen, nur die WHO von 21.463. Das RKI, das in Deutschland ansässige Institut, scheint meist mit seinen Zahlen hinterherzuhinken.
